In July 2015 Stephen Shingler and Geoff Wood visited Heartwood Forge, a metal forge in Athens, Georgia where Will Manning specializes in high-end, hand-crafted cutlery and culinary tools. Stephen and Geoff set out to create a body of work that would embody the atmosphere, grit, and materials of the forge by allowing them to seep into the work that was being created. Steel scale was added to water to create ink and coal dust was poured into a camera casing allowing scratches and light distortions to the film. Heated forged knives were used to mark images and rusted steel was used to create silhouettes of red-orange iron dust.

This collection of work is the first of a series of collaborations that the two artist plan to make. Using the workspace of a craftsman, their materials, and the inspiration of the environment, the artists craft new work inspired by process.
