Met: The Story of Matthew

Have you ever stopped to consider how many people you interact with each day? Add in those you pass by on the street and it can easily number in the thousands. Though we hurry by most everyone without a second glance, occasionally an interaction impacts you to such a degree that we are changed. You may meet someone today who ends up becoming your spouse or close friend. Or, you could have an interaction today with a stranger that causes you regret for years to come. Perhaps you’ll meet a person who becomes a mentor, or who you will mentor.

What if the person you met changed your life for all eternity?

Matthew was met by Jesus, and we have the account of his life being forever changed. As he traveled with Jesus, Matthew saw people healed. He watched Jesus love those in need, make claims to be the promised savior of the world, and call others to a radical life of faith. Matthew saw Jesus exhibit power over nature, the spiritual realm, and even death. He watched Jesus die on a cross and met him again three days later when he rose from the grave.

For those of us like Matthew who are followers of Christ, what made all the difference is that Jesus sought us out. It’s nothing we did (Eph. 2:4-8), but it’s the most important event of our lives. Our desire at Vintage Church is for every person to know the love Jesus has for them and to enter into that relationship he lived and died for.

Over the next twelve weeks we’ll take a look at what happens when you are met by Jesus. It’s more than a chance encounter or observing someone from afar. Jesus came to meet you, he will meet your deepest needs, and you will never be the same.
