Vintage Church North

When the busyness and great expectations of this season overwhelm us, two things we quickly abandon are prayer and hospitality. We rely on our own own strength to get things done, and with tasks as our focus we miss truly seeing those around us. Instead, let’s make plans to show up early to the gathering of Vintage Church North to settle yourself in prayer before welcoming new folks.

Scripture Passage for Today

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God. – Galatians 4:4-7

In September of 2018, Hurricane Florence made landfall in Wilmington, N.C. High wind, storm surge, and historic river levels left a wake of devastation and thousands of homes in ruin. Fifty-three women, men, and children lost their lives. If Christmas is all about good will towards one another, generosity, presents, and a wish for peace on earth, there’s no place for the families who have lost loved ones or are suffering onset poverty as a result of the storm. If Christmas begins and ends with humanity, we have no answer for tragedy. Thankfully, the true story of Christmas speaks directly to suffering. Look no further than a Christmas hymn:

Light and life to all he brings, risen with healing in his wings.

Mild he lays his glory by, born that man no more may die.

Thank God that he did not come for our comfort, safety, and pleasure. Instead he came to address the deepest problems of sin and death, and in him we have an answer to the tragedy of Hurricane Florence. This does not mean we are unconcerned with the plight of God’s image bearers; just the opposite. We are not focused on souls only, but love people. Followers of Christ obey the teaching and example of Jesus and all of scripture to bear the burdens of the least, the last, and the lost.

Instead of pacifying ourselves with the temporal pleasure of culture’s consumeristic Christmas, stand and declare the true Christmas message: Jesus Christ, the Savior who had conquered sin and death, and will return to usher in an eternity of hope.
